Besxar is testing whether the vacuum of space can make better semiconductor wafers than an Earth-based clean room, according to TechCrunch. The Washington, D.C.-based startup, founded by former OpenAI staffer Ashley Pilipiszyn, has signed a launch agreement with SpaceX to fly small manufacturing pods it calls Fabships across a dozen Falcon 9 booster missions.

Each Fabship is roughly the size of a microwave oven and rides alongside the booster, returning to Earth minutes after liftoff rather than reaching orbit. Besxar completed its first flight on July 6, 2026, aboard the Starlink 10-50 mission, flying two "Clipper Class" Fabships alongside 29 Starlink satellites; the company says early wafer samples showed lower particulate contamination than comparable Earth-made material, despite a flight-data-system malfunction on one canister. Pilipiszyn said she approached SpaceX about the idea three years ago: "We're at a time where it's actually more cost-effective to go where the physics already works."
