Exploration Company Raises $450M To Rival SpaceX

The Exploration Company, a Munich- and Bordeaux-based spacecraft maker, raised a $450 million Series C led by Atomico, Bessemer and the Scaleup Europe Fund to fund its Storm rocket engine and Nyx reusable capsule program.

THE RUNDOWN

1

Helene Huby says most of the $450 million goes toward the Storm engine and a launch pad, not the Nyx capsule -- a capsule-stage round is really funding a heavy-lift launcher meant to carry 40 tonnes to low Earth orbit.

2

Europe's largest-ever space round was co-led by Atomico and the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund with Bessemer alongside, putting European sovereign-flavored capital and US growth money behind the same Dragon alternative.

3

The $2 billion attached to 10 booked Nyx missions is contracts and commitments, not cash received, so how much converts to milestone payments before the November 2028 ISS docking is what actually funds the program.

4

Sierra Space raised $550 million at an $8 billion valuation in March for the runway-landing Dream Chaser, so the near-term scoreboard is simple: whichever capsule or spaceplane returns from the ISS first sets the price for betting against SpaceX.

The $2B in Nyx contracts Atomico cites are commitments, not booked cash -- the diligence question is how much converts to milestone payments before 2028. Sierra Space raised $550M at an $8B valuation in March for a comparable capsule bet; TEC's $450M Series C suggests investors are pricing execution risk on Storm's engine as much as Nyx's docking demo.

Analysis

The Exploration Company, headquartered in Munich, Germany and Bordeaux, France, raised a $450 million Series C it says is the largest ever by a European space company, according to TechCrunch. Atomico and the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund co-led the transatlantic round alongside Bessemer Venture Partners.

Founded in 2021 by CEO Helene Huby, a former Airbus and ArianeGroup executive, along with engineers who worked together on Europe's Orion-ESM and ATV programs, the company is developing Nyx, a reusable capsule comparable to SpaceX's Dragon, and Storm, a high-thrust reusable engine meant for a future heavy-lift launcher carrying up to 40 tonnes to low Earth orbit. Huby said most of the new capital goes toward Storm and a launch pad: "Where we need more money is to build a launch pad, and to build the rocket itself."

The company plans to dock Nyx with the International Space Station and return it safely to Earth by November 2028, and Atomico says 10 Nyx missions are already booked under more than $2 billion in contracts and commitments, including from the European Space Agency and NASA.

The Exploration Company's nearest American comparison is Sierra Space, which raised $550 million at an $8 billion valuation in March for its runway-landing Dream Chaser spaceplane -- a different reentry approach than TEC's capsule, but a similar bet that SpaceX won't own cargo-to-orbit alone.
