Valar Atomics Raises $1B at $6B for Factory Nuclear

Sequoia led a $1B Series B for Valar Atomics at a $6B post-money valuation, tripling the mark it carried in April, weeks after the startup used a fission reaction to power an Nvidia AI chip.

THE RUNDOWN

1

The $6 billion post-money sits against zero megawatt-hours of commercial generation -- the July demo powered an Nvidia AI chip and a website, which proves the reactor design makes usable power and says nothing about licensing.

2

Base Power raised $1 billion at $13 billion the same week selling batteries that exist today, so the same AI-power thesis is being priced at startup-software multiples for physical infrastructure with a regulatory gate in front of it.

3

Factory-built high-temperature gas-cooled reactors with vertically integrated fuel put Valar against Oklo, X-energy, Kairos Power and TerraPower -- and against the fact that no advanced US design has cleared NRC licensing into commercial operation.

4

The diligence item is the NRC submission date and which class of review it falls under, because that sets the years to revenue. Watch Texas too: Abbott's pause on new data center interconnections makes behind-the-meter nuclear more valuable.

A 3x valuation step in four months on a demo that powered one Nvidia chip is a bet on the licensing path, not the physics. The diligence item is the NRC submission date and what class of review it falls under -- that single fact sets the years between here and revenue, and almost nobody in the round can tell you it precisely. Compare against Base Power at $13B selling batteries that ship today. Same thesis, wildly different distance to a dollar. I'd want a named data center offtake before the next mark.

Analysis

Valar Atomics closed a $1 billion Series B at a $6 billion post-money valuation led by Sequoia Capital, Axios reported, with Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire joining the board. Atreides Management, Point72 Ventures, Snowpoint Ventures, Apandion Capital, Conviction, Dream Ventures, HOF Capital, Riot Ventures and Valor Equity Partners all participated. A $200 million credit facility brings total new financing to $1.2 billion, earmarked for mass production.

The valuation tripled from the $2 billion mark set by a $450 million round in April 2026 -- roughly four months earlier. What happened in between was a demonstration rather than a contract: in July, Valar used a nuclear fission reaction to generate enough electricity to power an Nvidia AI chip and host a website. Small in absolute terms, unambiguous as proof that the reactor design produces usable power.

The valuation tripled from the $2 billion mark set by a $450 million round in April 2026 -- roughly four months earlier.

Valar's bet is that small high-temperature gas-cooled reactors should be built in a factory, not custom-constructed on site, and that the fuel supply should be vertically integrated rather than purchased. That puts it against Oklo, X-energy, Kairos Power and TerraPower, all chasing data center demand, and against the reality that no advanced reactor design in the US has yet cleared NRC licensing and reached commercial operation.

The number to hold onto is the gap between $6 billion of equity value and zero megawatt-hours of commercial generation. Compare that to Base Power's $1 billion Series D at $13 billion the same week -- also an AI-power play, but one selling batteries that exist today. Investors are paying startup-software multiples for physical infrastructure with a regulatory gate in front of it, and the gate takes years.

What to watch: the NRC licensing track and whether Valar announces a named data center offtake agreement rather than a demonstration. Also watch Texas, where Governor Greg Abbott has paused new data center grid interconnections pending a state audit -- behind-the-meter nuclear gets far more valuable if grid connections stay rationed.
