7,000 mandatory internal users generating 800+ model-improving fixes in weeks is a compounding data advantage no coding startup can buy at any price -- that's the number I'd underwrite, not the $1.25 per million tokens. Anthropic and OpenAI's actual moat has to be retention and workflow depth now, not price, because Meta can lose money here forever. If you're diligencing a dev-tools startup built on top of any of these three APIs, ask which lab's fix velocity is fastest, not which one is cheapest this month.

Meta just did the thing every AI coding startup has been quietly dreading: it entered the market with a product priced to make the category unprofitable for anyone without a hyperscaler's balance sheet behind them. Muse Code, Meta's first terminal coding agent, launched this week at $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens, according to CNBC -- a fraction of what Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex charge, with a contributor tier priced more than ten times cheaper still.

I don't think the pricing is the interesting part. Meta can afford to lose money on developer tools indefinitely; that was never in question. What I'd actually watch is the internal adoption number: 7,000 Meta engineers are already required to use Muse Code weekly, and per the same reporting, that usage has already generated more than 800 fixes that improved the underlying model. That's a live, forced feedback loop no startup can replicate -- Meta isn't beta-testing Muse Code on outside developers hoping for goodwill, it's running it against its own codebase at a scale that generates real training signal every week.
