THE RUNDOWN

1

Anthropic expects its IPO to match or exceed SpaceX's record-setting size and is preparing to file publicly as soon as the end of August, [Bloomberg reported](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-20/anthropic-expects-to-match-spacex-s-record-ipo-size-or-top-it) -- SpaceX's June listing raised $86.2B including the overallotment option at a $1.75 trillion valuation, the largest IPO in history

2

CFO Krishna Rao has been leading early investor meetings since mid-August but has explicitly avoided discussing valuation, according to [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/13/anthropic-cfo-early-ipo-meetings-valuation.html); the $2 trillion-plus figures circulating are investors' own models, not a number Anthropic has confirmed

3

The step-up follows Anthropic's own disclosure that its annualized revenue run rate hit $65 billion in July, [Pulse previously reported](/pulse/anthropic-65-billion-arr-july-2026), up from roughly $9 billion in late 2025

Anthropic confidentially filed its draft S-1 with the SEC on June 1, working with Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan; the roadshow Pulse covered in July has since moved from early investor meetings toward an actual public filing

The tell is that Rao is fielding investor meetings without confirming a number -- that's a company gauging how high the market will bid before it commits to a print, and every LP who models Anthropic at $2T right now is doing Anthropic's price discovery for free. The diligence item for anyone holding Anthropic secondaries: does your paper reference the $965B Series H mark or the $1.1T-plus Nasdaq Private Market price, because those two numbers are now $150B+ apart and only one of them survives a real roadshow.

Analysis

Anthropic expects its initial public offering to match or beat the size of SpaceX's record-setting listing and is preparing to file publicly as soon as the end of August, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the preparations. That would be a change from where things stood when Pulse covered the start of Anthropic's IPO roadshow in July: what was then early-stage investor courting has now moved to CFO Krishna Rao actively leading meetings with a public filing date in view, rather than an open-ended process.

SpaceX's own June listing is the bar Anthropic is being measured against. SpaceX priced its IPO at a fixed $135 a share with no bookbuild range, raised $75 billion at the initial size and $86.2 billion once the overallotment option was exercised, and debuted at a $1.75 trillion valuation -- the largest IPO in history by a wide margin. For Anthropic to "match or top" that size would mean pricing a raise in the tens of billions of dollars, at a valuation multiple that would make it one of the most valuable companies ever to go public on day one.

What Anthropic has actually said versus what investors are modeling

Rao's investor meetings, which CNBC reported began around August 13, have focused on Claude's product roadmap, Claude Code and the company's management team -- not on a specific valuation target. Some Anthropic investors are modeling a valuation of $2 trillion or more based on their own analysis of the company's growth, but that figure is not something Anthropic itself has confirmed, and the distinction matters: a company managing its own narrative ahead of a roadshow has every incentive to let outside estimates run ahead of what it will actually claim in a prospectus, both to gauge demand and to make whatever number does end up in the S-1 look conservative by comparison.

The revenue trajectory underlying those investor models is real and disclosed:

  • July run rate -- $65B annualized, Pulse covered at the time, more than sevenfold growth from late 2025
  • Investor 2026 estimate -- $100B-$120B in full-year revenue if the pace holds through year-end
  • Confidential S-1 -- filed with the SEC June 1, working with Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, a bracket of underwriters large enough to handle a listing of this size

Why the SpaceX comparison is the real story here

Racing SpaceX's IPO size isn't just a vanity metric -- it plugs directly into where 2026's IPO market already stands:

  • If it clears $86B -- Anthropic would extend a record IPO pace already underway
  • 2026 IPO proceeds so far -- roughly $160.6B through August 19
  • 2021 full-year record -- $175B, now within reach even before OpenAI's own listing counts

Both Anthropic and OpenAI have draft S-1s on file with the SEC at the same time, and OpenAI's own CFO Sarah Friar has already said publicly that OpenAI isn't racing to beat Anthropic to market -- meaning this specific size comparison, against SpaceX rather than against OpenAI, is the one Anthropic's own camp appears to be leaning into.

The counterweight

A target size and an actual filed number are two different things, and the wide range investors are modeling -- from the $965 billion valuation set in Anthropic's February Series H round to over $2 trillion now -- shows how much of this is still speculation rather than company guidance. SpaceX's own post-IPO trading is a useful caution here too: Pulse has covered how SpaceX shares have already dipped below their $135 IPO price on a routine share unlock just weeks after listing, which is a reminder that matching a record-setting raise on day one says nothing about where a stock trades ninety days later. Anthropic's roadshow could also still slip past August -- confidential filings routinely see their public unveiling shift by weeks -- and a company managing investor expectations upward has an obvious interest in a big number leaking now, whether or not the eventual prospectus supports it.
